Primers are a bit of a marmite product in the beauty world, aren’t they? You either think they’re a waste of time, or you live by them. Personally, I live by them. I have dry and dehydrated skin, that sometimes gets flaky, has plenty of redness, and occasionally the hormonal breakout – sounds like a real dream, right? I need hydration, radiance, and longevity, and most foundations just don’t deliver on their own. I tried a stupid amount of products in 2017, and I’m rounding up my top pics for them all, starting with primers – keep reading to find out my top 5 and why they made the cut!

My Top 5 Primers for 2017
My skin type: Dry and dehydrated with jawline redness and occasional hormonal chin breakouts.
My primer prerequisites: Must hydrate the skin, and add longevity to a foundation. Bonus if it adds radiance!
MAC Strobe Cream*
While this technically isn’t marketed as a traditional primer, it has always been promoted as a prep step. Strobe Cream is a classic in the beauty world; Its pearly finish gives awesome glow and moisture to the skin. I’ve just got the original shade, but it now comes in several so it’s truly an all-complexion product. I love to use this under heavier or fuller coverage foundations (overtop of my regular daytime moisturizer), and it keeps the dryness at bay all day.
Becca Backlight Priming Filter
Have I gone on enough about this primer yet in the last year? Probably, it continues to be one of my go-tos. This really is an all in one: foundation longevity, hydration, radiance and tone. The pearly finish gives a beautiful look without looking like you have glitter face when you get into bright lights!
I never want to be without this – rarely do I repurchase a product due to my obsession with trying new, but I’ve bought this several times!
Smashbox Photo Finish Primer Water
This stuff is unlike anything else; A primer that is a spray! It’s super lightweight, can be used before and after makeup and totally extends the longevity. Unlike most setting spray products, this doesn’t feel like you’ve sprayed your face with hairspray and actually feels hydrating. If you’re the type that doesn’t want another layer on your skin, but wants that boost, Primer Water is perfect for you!
Guerlain L’Or Radiance Primer*
When you can actually see the gold in a product, you just know it’s going to be glam! This makes my skin super plump, hydrated and tightens up fine lines. It’s perfect for under heavy, full coverage foundations. If you’re really wanting something to address more mature, dehydrated skin then this is a must try.
Smashbox Photo Finish Primerizer
This is my recent love! A primer and moisturizer in one is perfect for this dry skinned girl! Now I can’t get away with wearing this as my only moisturizer, but it gives that extra dose that is so needed in these winter months! This is my current go-to for under heavier, matte foundations for keeping them skin-like.
Are you a primer person? If so which primers do you love?
