Bobbi Brown Crushed Lip Color Review

[dropcap]I[/dropcap]n a world of opaque, heavy, matte, lacquer-like lipsticks, Bobbi Brown has done what they always do: launched everyday, wearable makeup that people love and feel comfortable wearing. Never a brand for following trends, I’ve always known I can rely on Bobbi Brown to create wearable formulas and textures. The Crushed Lip Colors are no different, claiming to leave a ‘just-kissed stain effect’.

The Bobbi Brown Crushed Lip Color Lipsticks claim a lot of things. In the same sentence they boast a ‘high colour payoff with a blotted down stain effect’ – quite frankly I think those two things contradict each other. I would completely agree with the stain effect claim; These offer a sheer tint to the lips that can be built up to a stronger finish. I wouldn’t call them ‘high colour payoff’ however.

Formula-wise, these are very balm-like. The brand does say that it is created with Vitamin E, C and beeswax so that would explain it. Like any tinted lip balm, there is only so much layering you can put on before things start feeling gross. It does leave the lips feeling slightly hydrated but doesn’t have the glossy look a really hydrating lipstick can have. I did find it clung to the dry spots and lines in my lips a little, but that’s an issue I have with almost any lipstick. In general, I’ve owned many lipsticks that are more nourishing to the lips, so I won’t be reaching for this as a lip balm replacement anytime soon.

In terms of packaging, these are somewhat classic Bobbi Brown – black packaging with the addition of a colour coordinated centre. I’ll honestly say that I think they are expensive for what they are especially when it comes to the plastic packaging. For $38 CND, I would expect something a bit more luxurious, rather than cheap plastic. It could be said that you are paying for the formula, but given beeswax is one of the ingredients the brand boasts, I find it a little hard to believe!

Overall, these are nice for those who want a sheer, swipe and go lipstick that requires no mirror touch-ups. If you’re a real lipstick lover, you’ll probably feel rather underwhelmed.
