Tarte’s Maneater Eyeshadow Palette & Eyeliner

Tarte Maneater Palette and Liner Swatches and Review

In terms of eyeshadow palettes, Tarte Cosmetics is making a bit of a name for themselves these days! I first fell in love with the Tartelette Palette, then the Tarteist Pro Palette* and now we have the Maneater Palette*, which is basically a warm toned shadow lovers dream. Alongside the palette, the brand has launched Maneater Self-Sharpening Eyeliner* to complete the look, and I have swatches and thoughts on both!

Tarte’s Maneater Eyeshadow Palette Review & Swatches

Travel-friendly in size (its 4 inches square), with 8 beautifully curated shadows, I’ve got no doubt Maneater is going to be a hit. I’m not much for animal print, but those who are will love the gold, black and purple motif on the front of this cardboard palette (not to worry, it’s very sturdy and solid feeling!). When you open the palette you get that instant whiff of sweet vanilla, something Tarte has done on it’s last few palettes now¹ but it’s not terribly overwhelming for those who have sensitive noses, like yours truly.

What I instantly loved was how well thought out this tiny power house is in terms of shades; It’s perfectly balanced with a mix of mattes and shimmers from bone to chocolate and the warm rusty tone of “Hypnotic” is really what makes it pop! There are different textures and tones from light to dark here making it the ultimate one-palette-and-go type of product.

I found the pigmentation on all shades really good, with even the pale shade “Meow” showing up well on my skin without a hint of chalkiness. These blended like a dream without a primer or base, and stuck well without blending away to nothing. Like many of the Tarte shadows before it, these are incredibly soft and buttery, but because of that they tend to kick up quite a bit. I am completely fine with this kind of formula when it applies as beautifully as the Maneater Palette does! I found they wore all day without fading and I only had minor creasing in the inner corners at the end of a long day.

¹ I don’t completely understand brands feeling the need to make food scented eyeshadows. Anyone else feel me on this?

Tarte’s Maneater Self-Sharpening Eyeliner Review

Available at: Tarte Ulta

I love the idea of this liner being self-sharpening, once again making it a great choice to your handbag or travelling. When you screw the cap on and off, it keeps the tip relatively pointed making it easier to control when wanting precise lines. I do find the formula is relatively smooth and gel-like, and you get a bit of play time before it sets, which is my favourite type of liner to wear. Once it does set, it’s relatively long wearing in terms of no smudging, but I did notice it faced throughout the day. Tarte says this is safe for the waterline/tightline, but I found the pointed nib tickled and made it hard to apply; I prefer a creamier formula for that.

Tarte describes this as ‘triple black pigment”, which is where I think they go wrong here. This eyeliner is named “black” but it is nowhere near as black as I expect for my eyeliners. Directly upon application I noticed it drew own in more of a dark grey tone, and it continued to fade through the day. Even my swatch faded before I could even remove it, appearing like an aged tattoo would! Now, if the brand hadn’t claimed a ‘triple black pigment’ I would just chalk this up to not being a greatly pigmented eyeliner, but the claims had me expecting something inky black in depth, and this just let me down. I am a pretty hard person to please when it comes to eyeliner, and this just didn’t tick off enough boxes for me!

So while the eyeliner was a pass in my books, the Tarte Maneater Palette is such a massive hit for me! I’m already looking forward to wearing it tomorrow, and I think this is going to me my new fast favourite. When Tarte does a shadow well, they do it really well and Maneater is a palette full of damn good!

  1. Ahhhhhh this looks like such a great palette but alas, this South African gal won’t be able to get her paws on it :'(

  2. This really looks like a perfect palette :)) and it’s a shame it’s not available for everyone (I wish we had tarte in EU because shipping & customs makes them so not worth it)

  3. Ugh you know I am going to love this one. Tarte is really winning it lately with their palettes! This one seems like a great companion to the Tartelette in Bloom.

    1. The shimmers in this palette are WAY better than Tartelette in Bloom, so that’s a big plus. I found the shimmer shadows in the Bloom palette thin and blended out to nothing, whereas these ones really stick well. I am GUTTED it is Ulta exclusive, but last I heard there was an Ulta opening in Bellingham…
