This time of year I always get overwhelmed by what to wear to holiday parties and festive gatherings. As you all can clearly tell, I’m not a fashion blogger. Having said that, there are some tried and true makeup products that help take my mind off of having that “I’ve got nothing to wear!” panic, that I know will always perform and look glam in photos. Spurred on by my shiny new Daniel Wellington Classic Black Sheffield Watch (which I have an awesome discount code for below!) here are my top picks and tricks for looking incredible at any holiday function!
Pick A Foundation With No SPF to Avoid Flashback
You’ve probably heard about this one, but if not it bears repeating: SPF is not your friend when it comes to flash photography. If you’ve ever seen a picture of yourself looking absolutely white faced compared to the rest of your body, it’s probably because of the reflective nature of sunscreen in our makeup. While I’m an advocate of wearing a base with SPF 15 or greater during the day, at night or for parties I reach for something that will give me the coverage I need minus SPF. Believe or not due to different testing in different countries this is not always easier to tell; Makeup that has sunscreen it might not be labelled as such depending on the guidelines in your country.
My Top Pick For Party-Proof Base: Make Up For Ever Ultra HD Invisible Cover Foundation Stick.
My Pro Tip for Foundation That Parties All Night Long: Make sure to set cream formulas with powder to lock them in! This type of makeup tends to be more emollient, and can move with your own body heat so press a small amount of translucent powder with a puff into areas where your makeup normally disappears first!
Contour To Save Face
Once you’ve got yourself a flawless base, things can look a little one dimensional. This is when you want to bust out that contouring powder or palette and bring back the shape to your face. Dust a little under cheekbones, under the chin (Buh-bye double chin!) and around hair line to bring out your inner model.
My Top Pick For Selfie Ready Cheekbones: Smashbox Step by Step Contour Kit* comes in Light/Medium and Medium/Dark varieties is a complete set with brush included!
My Pro Tip for Victoria Secret Worthy Sculpting: Don’t pick a shade too ashy or it might make you look like you’ve crossed over to afterlife. Try blending some bronzer right on top of contour to bring back warmth (and life!) and pull the whole look together!
Eyes are the Windows of the Soul…
…So you’ll probably be thankful if you go the classic-glam route in 10 years time when you look back at the photos. Nothing says stressful like trying to nail the perfect smokey eye, and nothing says ‘unfortunate’ like clashing your eye makeup against an ugly Christmas sweater. You know what always looks timeless though? A flick of black liner and glimmering champagne shadow.
My Top Picks for Glam Holiday Eyes That Won’t Compete With Your Wardrobe: Tarte’s Tarteist Clay Paint Liner goes on super black and stays budge proof, and even comes with it’s own brush. Dior’s Fusion Mono Shadow in Mirror gives the most beautiful sparkling pale gold that would look incredible on anyone and taps on with your fingertips!
My Pro Tip For Looking More Hepburn and Less Cleopatra: I like to do my ‘flick’ or ‘wing’ first, starting at the corner of my outer lashline and directing up towards my brow. Then I go across my lashline from inner to outer and meet up to the flick. From there you can fill in the corner where the meet as much as you want dependant on the drama you like. I’ll then pat some of the sparkling gold shadow on the lid before touching up the liner to cover any overlap.
Go Bold, Or Go Home
When it comes to lips, a holiday party is the perfect excuse to pull out that stunningly beautiful (and probably way to expensive) lipstick that you don’t mind getting caught reapplying. Think of it as a subtle accessory that will catch the eyes of all your friends. Whether you like nude, red or want to go for a bright – anything will match well with the classic liner/shadow combo already mentioned!
My Top Picks For Lipstick’s Too Beautiful to Hide in a Handbag: The limited edition YSL Star Clash Lipsticks* are a thing of beauty, and come in both neutral and bright shades.
My Pro Tip For Keeping Lips Looking Lush All Night: REAPPLY! Seriously, you went and bought a swanky lipstick, it deserves to be shown off! The only shame would be to let it wear away without grace, so pull that bad boy out periodically through the night and be the envy of your friends!
Go Trendy With Accessories to Perk Up Any Outfit
I know some of you are like me, and stick to basic classics like little black dresses and skinny jeans with blouses. A great way to elevate your look is to pair it with an uber chic accesory like the new Daniel Wellington Classic Black watches. Seriously, how sexy is the black on black with rose gold detailing? I love the oversized 36mm face, and can’t count how many compliments I get when I wear one of my DW timepieces.
The incredible folks at Daniel Wellington have generously offered a discount to Girl Loves Gloss readers: Save 15% until the end of January 2017 and get FREE WORLDWIDE shipping with the code: LOVESGLOSS.
