Mascara Monday | MAC Upward Lash Mascara

MAC Upward Lash Mascara Review and Before and After

I’ll preface this Mascara Monday by saying that I’ve never been a huge lover of MAC mascaras. Over the years I’ve found most of them have let me down; Literally they never managed to hold a curl! When I started to hear good things about MAC’s Upward Lash Mascara*, and saw the unique looking brush on it and old school MAC mascara packaging, I knew it might be time to give another try to the brand I love so many other products from.

Upward Lash promises to offer “high-rise levels of volume, length and curl in seconds”. It always intrigues me when mascaras claim to offer both volume and length, because I generally find it quite rare for a mascara to do both well, whilst also holding the curl and not flaking or smudging. As you all know by now, I have pretty high standards when it comes to my lashes!
The brush/wand is quite unique here, with a hollow center which holds the product, and a relatively short molded brush that supposedly allows to get right into the corners of your lashline. I was initially worried that this was going to be clump city, because it does look like a lot of product comes out of the tube on the wand. Thankfully, I was really surprised to try it and find out that it doesn’t create a clumpy sticky mess like a lot of the ‘wetter’ style mascara formulas do on me. It in fact builds a tone of length (seriously, my lashes touch my eyebrows with this!), with some decent volume.
Upon first application I was thrilled to see that it evenly coated and defined lashes, and really kept the curl well. After two coats I noticed a bit more volume, but also a bit of my lashes sticking together a bit more than I’d like (but nothing that couldn’t be remedied with a lash comb). The small brush did in fact get into the corners really well, but also kept the formula from accidentally getting on my nose, eyelids and everywhere else I manage to smear it when I’m pulling mascara yoga to get into all the nooks and crannies. Because this is a wet formula, I recommend layering coats one right after each other, as this mascara does dry down quite stiff to the touch.
I was also thrilled to see how black this formula was – almost patent leather like. In fact the first time I wore it, my BFF commented out of the blue asking what I was wearing because it actually did look like I was wearing falsies. I’ve always been the type who wants to wear the blackest mascara I can get, so for me this really hit the nail on the head in terms of pigment. In terms of wear, it held the curl all day, with no smudging, but I did have some very minor flaking at about the 6 hour mark that was easily brushed away.

Overall I was super impressed by MAC Upward Lash Mascara – it’s a total win for the brand which has previously launched mascara’s that left something to be desired for me (with the exception of Extended Play Gigablack Lash, which is my ultimate for my lower lashes).  Throughout the day I first wore this, I kept catching myself saying, “wow my lashes still look really good!” which is always a sign of a good product!

Have you tried this mascara yet?
